| Description and Notes | Can you believe that between the 3 of us (Allison, Brye, and Jenny) we have completed all 99 blocks in this book?? Neither can we! We had a great time choosing, sewing, and sharing the blocks on SeamedUP. It is never too late to join the quilt-along - simply add the book to your stash and start a project - (we have a blog post that shows you how (please copy and paste this link to your browser) http://seamedup.blogspot.com/2011/12/quilt-along-how-to.html And now that we each have over 30 quilt blocks made... We will just have to see what we make of them! Stay tuned! |
Modern block aesthetic, but not geared for single-block quilts
Since the focus of this book (which is gorgeous) is on the block, sizing up these blocks into multiples needed for a project is up to the reader. That can be a bit intimidating for new quilters, so it's best recommended as a sampler project or someone who is comfortable creating their own patterns and calculating yardage requirements.
excellent but not for beginners
These is really an add on to Diane's original book so doesn't go as much into the basics of fmq. It shares some gorgeous techniques, though, and would be really beneficial to anyone interested in improving their skills. Just don't drop it in the tub like I did!
Interesting blocks
There are some interesting blocks in the book that I look forward to making. Several I know I won't make as they look to rely on novelty fabric which I do not use. As another reviewer commented, I would have like to see at least a few pictures with blocks arranged for a whole quilt.
I haven't purchased a quilting book for a while so I don't know if this is standard now, but I was a bit taken aback by the copyright statement at the front of the book.
"....These designs may be used to make items only for personal use or donation to nonprofit groups for sale or for display only at events, provided the following credit is included on a conspicuous label: Designs copyright c 2011 in Modern Blocks for C&TPublishing..."
This seems to asserting a broader interpretation of copyright than I have heard before.
Love it !!
Just bought it. Would love to see the quilts in EQ. Can,t wait to sew some. I started marking the ones I liked and ended up marking most of the blocks.
Something for Everyone
Just got the e-book version and there is something for everyone in this book! From simple piecing to applique, embroidery to paper piecing, curves to basic blocks...all in bright modern fabrics and beautiful colors.
I'll be participating the SeamedUP 99 Blocks Quilt Along - will you?

Blocks equal 12 inch finished.
I have been looking through this book whenever I have the chance between cooking dinner, dishes and watch my grandson so he does not terrorize the house.
There are some really great blocks in this book new innovative and creative. I could probably think of more positive adjectives another time but right now I am TOO tired to think of them. I am looking forward to making some quilts using these blocks. There are a large number of techniques used including strip piecing, partial seams and paper piecing, embroidery and applique.
Templates and pattern pieces for the majority of the blocks are included. Other pieced blocks have cutting directions. Everything needed is pretty much supplied to be able to make these blocks. That said their are some glaring omissions.
Missing ....
Several blocks should be shown as multiples as a quilt top to get the full impact of the block. NO QUILT TOPS are in this book. I would have like to see at the least a EQ7 rendition. As is the blocks I am really interested in I have to draft in EQ7 before I would proceed with the quilt top.
Something else I noted and this is a pet peeve of mine with all patterns/ books lately. Patch sizes are not included in the patterns. Since the size of patches are important to accuracy of the block I feel all patterns should include patch sizes during construction. All blocks are 12 inch finished in the book.
I wish that in the future that the applique and embroidery blocks are kept in their own book instead of in a piecing book. I think there will be more books like this in the future and I look forward to collecting them all.

I have been drafting out the blocks in EQ for the last two nights and seeing what the quilts look like. I am doing this for two reasons, one I wanted to see what the quilts would look like made from these book and two to become proficient with EQ7. The blocks I have made have been very exciting.
